What is Computer Aided Design?

Computer Aided Design is a recent development in many manufacturing industries, and has had a real impact on the jewellery industry. It has made it far easier for people to have their own rings designed with accuracy and speed. Using programs like JewelCAD, we can work from your sketches and description to create a virtual 3D model of your jewellery piece. This model can be sent as an image via email, fax or post, allowing you to see a preview of your piece and make changes to it long before any physical materials are involved.

When you're happy with your design, we can send it to a prototyping service which creates a three-dimensional print-out of your piece in wax. This is then used to create a mould, from which your piece can be cast in the metal of your choice. From here we can have stones set into the piece and finish (polish and texture) it in a variety of ways.

I've never used CAD before. Why should I use Interrobang?

Well, if you don't already use CAD technology, you're missing out on some major benefits. The fast turnaround time of CAD design compared to traditional methods can mean huge savings for your business, and digital delivery of files means that you can take advantage of our services no matter where you are.

I already have a CAD provider / do my own CAD. Why should I use Interrobang?

If you're overflowing with CAD work and finding you can't keep up, Interrobang can take care of that overflow. If you find you're not receiving enough CAD work to warrant employing someone in-house full time, you can save employee-related costs by outsourcing your CAD work to us. If you have a CAD staffer on holiday, Interrobang can fill the gap for you. You can use us for all of your work, some of your work or for occasional overflow and we offer some of the cheapest rates in the industry. No matter which way you look at it, chances are our service will save you money.

I just want a personal piece made. Why should I use you rather than the local jewellery store?

Most jewellers outsource almost the entire design process, from creating the piece in a CAD program to the wax print to the casting and even the finishing. So when you go through your local jeweller, you're paying the fees of the outsourced service providers plus the jeweller's markup.

When you go through Interrobang, you pay us only for the JewelCAD portion of your job. We then refer you to a prototyping service to have your wax print done, and to a casting company to have the ring cast and finished. Because you're dealing directly with the provider of each service, you're not paying any additional markup. This also means that you can communicate directly with the people creating your piece so you can be sure your vision is brought to life the way YOU imagine it.

Can I get a quote?

Absolutely. Simply email a sketch and description of your job to Chris, our head of JewelCAD services, at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it . Your quote will be as accurate as the information you send. Specifically we need to know which type and quality of metal you'd like (e.g. 18 carat white gold, 9 carat yellow gold, platinum), your finger measurement, what size and type of stones you'd like set into the piece, and any other relevant measurements.
A detailed sketch from at least one angle is a must.
